The Potential for Artificial Recharge of the Tertiary Aquifers of the Latrobe Valley Depression, Victoria, Australia
نویسنده
چکیده
The Latrobe Valley has an extensive monitoring network to measure the environmental impacts of mining and power generation operations. Regional groundwater and topographic survey data have been recorded for over 40 years. This data is used to calibrate mathematical models for the prediction of groundwater drawdown and subsidence. The concept of artificially recharging aquifers through re-injection of aquifer water adjacent to or beneath worked out mines is currently being evaluated. Artificial recharge could result in reduced operational costs as well as a reduction or potential reversal of the groundwater related environmental effects of coal mining. This paper explores the potential for artificial recharge using groundwater-modeling techniques.

Development of an Improved Fuzzy Approach to Model Potential Sites for Groundwater Artificial Recharge
Delineation of potential sites for groundwater artificial recharge is an important and challenging task. The purpose of this research is to develop a new data-driven fuzzy approach to model potential sites for groundwater artificial recharge. To achieve this end, the efficient criteria of a proper site for groundwater artificial recharge were first recognized and presented as a conceptual model...
متن کاملA very public death: dying of mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer (M/ARLC) in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia.
INTRODUCTION It is anticipated that in Australia the number of cases of mesothelioma will continue to rise significantly over the next 15 years with power station workers having a risk second only to asbestos mill workers. Mesothelioma responds poorly to treatment and is almost always fatal, yet there have been few studies related to the palliative care needs of this diagnostic group and none f...
متن کاملEfficiency assessment of AHP and fuzzy logic methods in suitability mapping for artificial recharging (Case study: Sarbisheh basin, Southern Khorasan, Iran)
Recently, special attention has been paid to artificial groundwater recharge in water resource management in arid and semi-arid regions. Water resources distribution in these regions is extremely uneven, both in spatial and temporal forms and groundwater is the only water resource and is a major constraint on economic and social development. Artificial groundwater recharge is considered an appr...

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are originally derived from the ICM of blastocysts and are characterized by their ability to self-renew and their pluripotencies. Only a few reports have been published on ESC isolations and line establishment in animals, even fewer in horses. However, it is still important to isolate equine ESCs for animal biotechnology and therapeutic applications. In the present s...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the Latrobe Valley Better Health Injury Prevention Program, a regional community based intervention in south east Victoria, Australia. METHOD The evaluation design was quasiexperimental including pre-intervention and post-intervention observations in a predominately town dwelling population of approximately 76,000. There was no comparison community. Process measures incl...
